Regretting You – Movie “Review”

Alright, I want to first start by saying that I don’t normally do a lot of “reviews” on movies, especially on movies I don’t think are very good, but I had strong enough feelings about this one that I just have to get it off my chest.

Dan and I went to go see “Regretting You” in theaters earlier this week. It’s based on the book by Colleen Hoover, and I really enjoy her books, so I was looking forward to seeing this movie. I haven’t finished the book yet, I’m only about halfway through it, but I’ve enjoyed it so far and when Dan and I had a free evening, we decided to go see the movie.

Dan and I go to a lot of movies. He’s willing to go watch just about anything if it means he gets some movie theater popcorn. And I’m always happy to tag along. I’ve seen a number of movies in theaters that I probably wouldn’t watch ever again, but I honestly can’t remember a time where I felt the urge to just leave in the middle of a movie.

That is, until we saw “Regretting You.”

I’m sorry, the movie was legit awful. It did actually follow the book pretty well for the most part – at least what I’ve read so far anyways – but the choice of cast and the delivery of lines was actually cringey.

I’m a hopeless romantic and I love the cheesy stories. But this was cheesy to a level even I felt like gagging. I looked over at Dan probably three times during the movie and apologized for making him sit through it lol. We powered through and watched the whole thing, but man, it was a long two hours.

My biggest complaint: who the heck thought it was a good idea to cast Dave Franco for the lead in a Romance movie??Whoever it was, should be fired immediately. I might be in the minority here, but I can’t stand the Franco brothers. And to put one of them in a serious role like this? Nah, they did Collen Hoover dirty and ruined her movie from the get go by casting him. Just my two cents.

I am curious if anyone reading this saw the movie and has a different opinion on it. Am I wrong?? I looked up some reviews of the movie after we saw it, and got pretty mixed feelings about it. But I’d love to hear from someone who thought it was good.

Colleen Hoover has two more book/movie adaptations coming out in 2026: “Reminders of Him” and “Verity.” I enjoyed both of these books – especially Verity – and I was looking forward to them coming to theaters. Now, I’m nervous they’re going to be the same quality as “Regretting You.” I really hope I’m wrong!

Again, I’m really curious: if you’ve seen this movie, what were your thoughts on it? If you haven’t seen it, then I’d recommend saving your money. 🙂

Until next time! 🙂

  1. It was better than I was expecting from the trailer and ratings. I also did not enjoy or finish Verity and IMHO Coleen Hoover is an average writer. I got a free movie ticket so thought if it was truly awful I’d walk. Overall it wasn’t a groundbreaking storyline in fact I think the most problematic parts were it is regressive in reinforcing unhealthy relationship stereotypes in its portrayal of adultery, new fatherhood, first sexual experiences and parenting (pretty much every relationship in the movie). The last 5 minutes were cute and kind of explained why this book had been made into a movie.
