Coyote Hunting

I was brainstorming ideas on what to blog about this week and was kinda struggling to pinpoint something I could write about that wouldn’t get me in trouble – it was a WEEK!

I was talking to Dan the other day and I asked him if HE had any ideas on what I could write about. He said no.

I asked him what he’d want to read about and he goes, “coyote hunting.”

At first, I laughed and kind of rolled my eyes. Coyote hunting is one of his favorite activities in the world. Of course he’d say that! But then I thought, “why not??” Why not talk about my husband’s obsession – from MY point of view?

Everyone has something they are super into. Whether it’s hunting, a sport, collecting something, you name it. Ever since I met Dan, I knew hunting was his thing. Even when we first started talking, a lot of our conversations involved hunting in some manner.

I didn’t grow up hunting. I honestly didn’t know coyote hunting was a thing or that it’s even as popular as it is before I knew Dan.

For those who don’t know: coyotes don’t have a specific hunting season. There isn’t a limit on how many you can hunt, and you don’t need a tag like you would for a deer or a turkey. As long as you have everything you need to be a legal hunter, you can go hunt coyotes anytime of the year.

In fact, Dan has met many land owners on his hunting travels that WANT people to come hunt them. Especially anyone with cattle. Coyotes and cattle don’t make a good mix.

Anyway, since there are few restrictions on coyote hunting, Dan and one of his brothers usually go on a couple of hunting trips a year. His brother has really gotten into it too and it’s fun to see the two of them bond over it.

Anyone who knows Dan knows he’s also a big research guy. You see me scrolling on my phone and I’m probably scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, but you see him on his phone and you can bet money he’s doing research. And if he’s not researching farm stuff, he’s probably doing research on coyote hunting. He’s always looking for ways to better their hunting experience and get the most out of it.

He watches a lot of hunting videos too and he likes to watch them sometimes when he can’t fall asleep. I’ve woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of coyotes howling many a time. And believe it or not, there are lots of coyote hunting podcasts out there too! Dan listens to those on his way to the farm a lot – I’ll take it over the strip till podcasts he also listens to frequently lol.

I may tease him a lot and I definitely miss him when he’s on those hunting trips – they usually go places where service is less than ideal. Maybe NATE could help get some more cell towers out there. 😉 But I do think it’s pretty cool he’s so passionate about it.

The last trip they went on, they started getting “artsy” with their photos lol

Dan can be a pretty introverted guy, but if you get him going on a topic he enjoys, he will talk your ear off. And he will definitely talk your ear off about coyote hunting if given the opportunity.

Dan isn’t much of a coffee drinker, but I found this mug on Etsy and almost bought it for him anyway – it made me laugh!

Like I said, it’s really fun to see him get so excited about hunting. I’ve learned a lot about almost any kind of hunting there is, but especially coyote hunting, and I look forward to experiencing and hearing about more of his adventures.

And even though I love it and look forward to it, does NOT mean I’m saying he should go on MORE hunting trips – I know he’s going to read this and think just that! 😉

With pheasant opener last weekend, and deer season just around the corner, we’ll be in the thick of hunting before we know it. I’m looking forward to it!

Until next time! 🙂
