Back to the Grind

After three weeks off of running, it was nice to get back out there this week. And even though I was still walking every day during the break, I was a little worried it would be tough getting back into the swing of things. My muscles were a little sore, but overall, it felt really good!

I’ve said in many blog posts over the years that running, and exercise in general, is how I handle my stress. It’s basically my own – cheaper – version of therapy. And while I was at least still able to move while just walking, there’s nothing quite like pounding the pavement or getting good and sweaty to work out my frustrations.

I’ve had several people ask me over the last few weeks and months if I was planning on doing any big races this year or if I was training for anything in particular. As of right now, I have zero plans to do any races this year. I’m sure I’ll still do a 5K here and there, but other than that, I’m keeping my calendar open. Someday, I’d love to get back into half marathons, and I’d love to try at least one more marathon at some point in my life, but that’s not what I want right now.

Right now, I just need to move my body. Of all the things I don’t have control over, at least I can still do that. And whether I’m going on a “therapy run” and trying to work out all my thoughts, or running with friends to keep my mind off those thoughts – I usually feel better afterwards.

I really can’t recommend it enough. Yes, sometimes work outs suck. Yes, sometimes they hurt and you feel like you’re going to die. But not only is it good for you physically, it’s so good for your mentality too. Sometimes it almost helps to think about the things that make you angry while you work out, it really helps give you that extra “umph” to get through. You are literally taking it out on the work out. It won’t solve all your problems, but I promise you’ll feel better – even if it’s only a little bit.

So, I challenge all of you to give it a try. And with the weather – hopefully – getting better, it’s even easier to get out and get moving. No excuses. Whether or not you have a gym membership, your own gym equipment, or it’s dreary and dreadful outside, there is always something you can do to move your body. You just have to get a little creative.

Happy moving, everyone.

Until next time! 🙂
