Playing Tourist

This last week I had the opportunity to go back to Washington DC – my home away from home. One of my coworkers and myself got to spend the week at the Emergence Conference learning more about iMIS. If you haven’t heard of iMIS, google it. 🙂 It was a great week, and I loved being back on the East Coast.

We flew out on Sunday and the conference didn’t start until Monday morning. So, since my coworker had never been to DC before, we took the opportunity to do some touristy stuff on Sunday night. We booked a night bus tour of the monuments, and it was a lot of fun! Seeing the monuments at night is always pretty cool, and our tour guide shared some facts I didn’t know before, so I learned a few new things too.

We even got to see the newest war memorial: the Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial. It literally only opened up a few weeks ago, so it’s VERY new. This is only a part of it. It kind of makes a big circle, and it’s got a fountain in the middle. It was pretty cool.
The World War II Memorial has always been one of my favorites.
I love the Thomas Jefferson Memorial as well, but this is as close as we got to it on the tour. The tour guide said it would have taken an extra hour to get us all over there. Oh well!

I think the monuments and memorials are something I’ll honestly never get tired of seeing. I’m not even sure how many times I’ve visited them now, and they still take my breath away every time.

Once the conference started on Monday, it was pretty busy and didn’t leave a lot of extra time to get out and explore. Not to mention our brains hurt by the end of the day, so it was nice to relax at the end of the day as well. I ended up coming home Thursday, while my coworker came back Friday – the Thursday courses were all full by the time I registered. 🙁

But my flight wasn’t until midafternoon, so I had a little more time Thursday morning to get out and play tourist again. I decided to spend a few hours at Arlington National Cemetery, walking around and taking it all in. I didn’t have a TON of time to really stop and look super closely at much, but I did see the big things like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and JFK’s grave. And there was a little museum set up for Women in the Military that I very quickly went through. It was cool!

I got to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the exact right time. They had a wreath laying ceremony that I got to watch. It had rained that morning, but luckily was dry while I was visiting.
The fall colors definitely made it very beautiful.

It was a wonderful week of learning and exploring and I loved getting to spend some time in one of my favorite places. And to top it off, I got upgraded to first class on my flight home and it was wonderful!! I’m not sure how I’ll go back to economy after this. 😉

Look at all that leg room!!!

If you’ve never been to DC before, I highly recommend visiting at some point. There are so many wonderful things to do and see out there, you’ll never be bored. Dan has never been there before either and I can’t wait to finally bring him out there someday too. I’m looking forward to it!

Happy to be home now and relax and recover this weekend before hitting the ground running again next week. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Until next time! 🙂
