Off the Rails

Those who know me well, know that I like to plan things out. I don\’t ALWAYS have to have a plan in mind, but when I do have one, I like to stick to it. I don\’t like to have any last minute changes or interruptions, I just want things to go as I planned. Well, this week has thrown me for several loops, and I ended up having to make some changes. It\’s been a long week for sure!

Although most of the changes this week were pretty minor, it felt like they just kept adding up, and it was driving me crazy! It started with intramural volleyball on Tuesday. I\’ve been doing volleyball on Tuesday nights for the last five weeks with the LATC kids, and this Tuesday was the last one. Tuesday morning, I had everything ready to go: schedule was finalized, championship prizes were packed up in my bag, and the gym was all set for us. Volleyball has been a little tricky with Covid, just because there were a handful of teams that weren\’t able to play every week because they had Covid or were quarantined, or both. I had to make several changes to the schedule the past few weeks to make it work with teams that had to cancel last minute. But, I made it all the way up to 7pm Tuesday night with no word of any changes, so I figured we were set to go come game time at 7:30pm.

We made it through the first two sets of games without any issues, but about ten minutes into the third game, I noticed we had a team missing. We had two quarts, so we would have four teams playing at a time. I sent a quick text off to the team captain of the team that was missing to see if they were still coming, and they responded with: \”Oh, we couldn\’t get enough people to come tonight. Should have told you sooner.\” UGH! Now, I have a team that is here, ready to play, and no one to play against. I went to break the news to them, and they handled it surprisingly well. Instead of getting upset, they decided they would just play boys against girls with the members of their own team, and still managed to have some fun. It turned out okay in the end, but it frustrated me that we had to make that adjustment.

Thursday night, I had a yoga night planned for the students, and it was also the last event of the semester. I had about seven students show up, so it was actually a pretty decent turnout, but then shit kinda hit the fan. I had the event scheduled to start at six, and ten minutes after six, our instructor was still no where to be found. I tried calling them twice, but couldn\’t get ahold of them. So, I jokingly told the students, \”Any of you know how to teach yoga, since our teacher is missing?\” I honestly expected them to just leave, but one of them suggested we pull up some yoga videos on the projector and do it that way. I thought it was a great idea, but unfortunately, the laptop wasn\’t connected to the projector and I couldn\’t figure out how to do it. Ultimately, that student said she\’d just play the videos on the laptop, and also help lead the group in case not everyone could see the computer screen. I wanted to hug her! She was my hero of the night. She did a fantastic job and I really appreciated her stepping forward.

Thankfully, the instructor did eventually show up – just an hour late! There was a communication issue on their end, but she did come and teach her class anyway. It ended up being a very successful event, and I participated in the yoga as well and thought it was great. I\’m just really glad those students were so patient and forgiving! It was definitely rough to make it up as we went, but it all worked out in the end.

Finally, if you\’ve been reading my blogs lately, you probably remember a few weeks ago I said I was going to start training for my first marathon pretty soon. I was set on running the Fargo Marathon held in May, which meant my training was scheduled to start next month. I was ready to go and get started, but then they came out this week and said the Fargo Marathon would be pushed to September of next year. To say I was bummed is an understatement! Now, I probably won\’t start training until the time when the race was originally supposed to take place. On the other hand, I\’ll have more time to get into better running shape before I start hard-core training AND by pushing it that far back, the chances of it being switched to a virtual race are HOPEFULLY very slim. It wasn\’t part of my plan, but I\’ll just have to make some changes and make a new plan.

I know many people can relate to this. You make a plan, you want it go perfectly, and then ya get a big curveball thrown at you. It sucks! But, you make the most of it, see how you can make it work differently, and learn from it for the future. If every plan always went smoothly, life would be way less interesting. Just take it as it is and move forward. Something I\’ve had to tell myself a few times this week!

Here\’s to hoping y\’all had a smoother week than I did, and that I\’ll get back on track next week!

Until next time! 🙂
