Swimming Through Life

Winter Is Here

Oofta it definitely feels like winter now! These last couple weeks have been down right chilly and it’s been a bit of an adjustment. We were so spoiled with mild temperatures and little snow through December and the first part of January, I thought we might have a nice winter! But unfortunately that’s not usually how it rolls, especially in South Dakota.

Since the temps have been far below zero for almost two weeks now, we’ve had to adjust our daily routines a little bit. I’ve only walked Dobby a handful of times since the temps dropped and usually we walk every day. I run outside 3-4 times a week and when it’s that far below zero, it’s not fun or safe to try to run outside.

But is that an excuse to be lazy until it warms up!? Nope! Like I’ve said twice now, we adjust to what is going on outside and out of our control.

I feel terrible that Dobby can’t go for his daily walks, but we try to spend a little more time playing inside. He’s got a ton of toys we can throw around and when he gets extra stir crazy I let him run around the backyard until his paws get cold. It’s usually only a few minutes, but he can at least let out a little energy that way.

Hard to say no to a walk when he looks at me like that.

And just because I can’t run outside doesn’t mean I just don’t work out those days. I bring my workouts inside as well. I’m not a huge fan of the dreadmill, so I usually only use that when I’m really desperate. I’ve been spending a lot of time on the elliptical or the bike, been doing a ton of yoga, and been doing more weight workouts as well. My running might take a small hit for a short while, but I’m keeping in shape in other ways.

The weather can also kind of take a hit on our mental health as well. When it’s that cold and we can’t do anything outside, when even walking to your car is miserable, it’s easy to get bored or just want to stay under the covers where it’s warm.

And while it can be relaxing to stay home and do nothing sometimes, if you’re like me, then sometimes you NEED to be busy. If you’re stressed or something is troubling your mind, sitting around with nothing to do but think about what’s bothering you isn’t going to help anything. When this happens, I like to clean my house or work on my book. It’s busy work that distracts me and keeps me busy.

I also like to give myself something to look forward to as well. Knowing I’m stuck inside all day is much easier when I have my favorite snack or my favorite hot chocolate in my hand. Splurging every now and again is just fine, especially if it keeps you sane! Sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do to get through these bitter winters.

What are some ways you fight the winter blues? Do you workout? Give yourself something to look forward to? Maybe you have some winter specific hobbies? I’d love to hear them! Drop me a message or comment below. We’re all getting through the cold together.

On the plus side, next week is looking LOVELY. Funny that 35 degrees is going to feel like an actual heat wave!

Stay warm everyone!

Until next time! 🙂
