What’s the Secret to Good Public Speaking?

Calling all public speakers! I need some sound advice. What do you do that helps you speak in front of small or large groups of people? Do you still get nervous? How do you combat that? What are your secrets!?

For my job, I have to get in front of a lot of potential and incoming students to hype up student activities. Usually my presentation lasts about 15-20 minutes, and I’ve had to do it so many times now, I’ve lost count. The first time I did it, I was obviously VERY nervous. I must have been visibly shaking or something, as one my co-workers came up to me and went, “Megan, I can tell you’re scared out of your mind right now. Take a few deep breaths.” It’s gotten much easier every time I do it, and now, I really don’t get as nervous. I can’t say I like it much more than I did before, but I don’t feel like my heart is literally going to leap out of my chest anymore.

However, I did notice this week as I was once again delivering my speech, that I talk super, super fast, and sometimes forget to take a breath. I had to stop and inhale two or three times while I spoke because I’d suddenly remember I needed to breathe as well as talk!

How do I overcome that? Is it something I just need to keep practicing and hope it gets better? I try to focus on slowing down and breathing while I’m talking, but then I forget what I’m supposed to be talking about – I am a very one-thing-at-a-time person.

I would absolutely love some tips on how to become a better public speaker. It’s a big part of my job, and I’d like to get even better at it. I’d also like to not pass out on stage because I forget to breathe, and it’d be ideal if people could understand what I am saying the whole time, instead of a million words flying out of my mouth all at once (that might be a slight exaggeration, but you get my point).

So, give me what you got! Whether it’s advice from your own personal experience, a book you’ve read, or whatever it may be. I’m always looking to learn new things, and you can ALWAYS get better at the things you do now. If you’d got anything you think is helpful, drop it in the comments, or send me a message. I’d love to work with you. πŸ™‚ Thank you in advance!

Until next time! πŸ™‚
