What Do Our Dreams Mean?

Today, I want to talk about dreams. Not the “I dream of being a writer someday!” kind of dreams, but the dreams we have when we are asleep. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been so dog gone tired this week, or what, but I have been having some CRAZY dreams lately. AND I feel the compulsive need to share. Plus, if I’ve been dreaming crazy, I’m sure others have been, too and I want to hear them. Maybe someone out there can even tell me what my dreams mean!

Anyway, I’ll start with the least crazy, but probably the most scary. I think it was Tuesday night or Wednesday night, I was drifting off to sleep, and I’m certain I was about 95% out at this point, when all of a sudden I dreamt I was in a car crash. I bolted straight up in bed, was breathing heavy, and was already sweaty. Probably pretty common, as I’ve heard lots of other people experience this too, but why do these dreams happen? They scare the beejesus out of me! And then it always takes a while to relax enough to fall back asleep afterwards. I heard once that if you die in your dreams, you die in real life. Whether that’s true or not, I have yet to die in one of my dreams, so I’m going to take that as a good sign lol. But then why so many close calls?? Makes you wonder…

Earlier this week, kicking off the weird dreams, I had a dream that I would be swimming in the Olympics in Tokyo! Pretty cool, right? Except then it took a weird turn. My closest friends and family and I all got to Tokyo, and found out I would not win my best race. How we found this out before I actually swam was a mystery to me. But – and this is totally not like them in real life! – my supporters decided they didn’t want to watch me swim if I wasn’t going to win, so they said I could either go home with them, or find out how to get home by myself. Disappointed, I decided to go with them. To add salt to the wound, we had to ride home in coffins back to the US?? I don’t know how to explain that one, but I do remember waking up feeling VERY claustrophobic.

The most recent one was Friday morning. I had a dream that I had given birth and had a baby. Which, not gonna lie, got me pretty excited. Ever since Molly and Tanner had Conner, I’ve had some serious baby fever lol. Anyway, I gave birth to the weirdest looking baby. It already had a full mouth full of teeth, which was super creepy, and it was long and gangly like it had been stretched out in the womb. I was so disappointed that I didn’t have a cute baby! If I have a baby in real life that has a full set of teeth already, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I think the funniest part of that dream was when my alarm started going off, I remember thinking to myself: “oh, I’m on maternity leave, I don’t have to go to work today.” Then when I realized I wasn’t actually on maternity leave, I laughed and then cried because I actually did have to get out of bed hahaha.

Honestly, how do our brains come up with weird stuff like this? It’s kind of fascinating, and a little terrifying at the same time. If anyone out there is a dream expert, I’d love to have you pick my brain and tell me what my dreams mean. I’d love to pick your brain too and find out why we dream what we dream. Our brains can’t make up faces in our dreams – or so I’ve been told – so how can we make up such weird scenarios? It’s interesting to think about!

I’m curious if anyone reading this can remember any crazy dreams they’ve had. Whether it was recent or a long time ago. I just want to know I’m not the only one having crazy dreams!! Leave a comment or shoot me an email. I want to hear what you’ve got! 🙂

**On a completely unrelated note, don’t forget to come to the State Fair in Huron next weekend! I’ll be there with Sink or Swim on Sunday the 5th from 10am-4pm in the Arts building. Hope to see you there!!

Until next time! 🙂
